Sports Premium

Our school has a great tradition of physical education and team sports. We provide one and a half to two hours of high quality physical education for every child per week through our curriculum and we offer a wide range of opportunities for our children to participate in after-school sports clubs and extra-curricular competitive sports.

In West Lancashire we are very fortunate to have a School Sports Partnership. We work closely with them to enhance our provision and gain access to high quality coaching and training for our staff. We are in the fourth year of the national scheme of School Sports Premium funding. Each year, we have decided to use this funding to buy into our School Sports Partnership’s coaching offer. The benefits that this additional money brings are huge. All P.E. lessons in Key Stage 1 and 2 are taught by a professional coach alongside our teaching staff. We have one specialist coach per half term. Each coach teaches the classes twice per week so the depth of coverage of each curriculum area helps the children to make excellent progress.

The qualified, specialist coaches also run an after-school sports club every Tuesday for Years 1-3 and Mr. Peetoom runs clubs every Wednesday and Thursday for Years 4-6.  These clubs have a very high uptake and are an important part of our sports provision.

Our staff have also benefitted from working alongside the specialist coaches.  The coaches give fresh impetus to P.E. and their new ideas and expertise help staff to develop their own teaching and assessment.

Our swimming lessons are also provided through the School Sports Partnership.  We swim for two terms (split between Eager Beavers and Wise Owls) at Park Pool, in Ormskirk.  The children have been taught by two swimming instructors alongside their class teacher, and this outstanding provision has helped them to make fantastic progress.

In Year 5, our children have the opportunity to participate in the Bikeability programme.  It’s about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle on today’s roads.  It gives them the confidence to enjoy all kinds of cycling.

Our children have access to a range of outdoor adventure education activiites.  Children in Years 4, 5 and 6 children are invited to attend Min-y-Don, a Christian adventure centre near Barmouth in Wales, every year for 4 days. In addition, every two years, the whole school attends a local outdoor adventure and forestry school day.
