Curriculum Overview

Our school has a clear intent behind our carefully designed and balanced curriculum offer.

Here at Westhead Lathom St James CE School we want:

‘A curriculum that is challenging, inspiring and engaging; in which all pupils flourish spiritually, creatively and academically to become confident young people.’

‘With God’s power working in us, God can do much, much more than anything we can ask or imagine.’ Ephesians 3:20

The rationale behind this is that as a C of E school we are dedicated to being fully inclusive and aim for all pupils, regardless of background, to make expected or better progress across the curriculum. We are also committed to ensuring all pupils have access to a wide curriculum that develops their spiritual and creative needs as well as academic needs. We want all of our pupils on leaving Year 6 to be well prepared for their move to high school and are dedicated to ensure pupils are developed into well rounded confident individuals.

The St James’ Curriculum is run on a 2-yearly cycle to accommodate our mixed age classes. This means that the knowledge, skills and vocabulary we want pupils to acquire are planned carefully for progression.

There is a clear overview of the whole curriculum followed by detailed medium term planning. The curriculum that we follow is thematic with an emphasis on subject specific skills to ensure that each subject retains its independence but so that pupils can also see the interdependence between subjects. This enables pupils to make connections in their learning across the range of subjects taught and provides opportunity for application of new found knowledge and skills across many lessons so that pupils retain knowledge learned.
